Matt runs the Rugged Maniac 2015

What's that speck in the distance?

Growing ever closer.

Oh look, it's Matt!
He's jogging toward me because the Rugged Manic takes place at Portland International Raceway (PIR), just a hop, skip and a jump from our house.  So we walk. Except he forgot something, so had to run back and get it, then run back to catch up to me.

Anyway, there's massive road construction going on around PIR.  And here, you can see where they have installed a new asphalt path for pedestrians.  They had to remove part of the PIR wall and shrubbery to do so.

Matt poses in his Edge shirt.  It's his first race since the extinction of Edge.

Ready to race.  And for the Athletic Supporter to hold that t-shirt he has in his hand.

We had some time before the race started, so we wandered.  We found this platform where you could jump into a poofy air pillow thing.  We both jumped. Matt isn't so fond of heights, but for me it was much like jumping off the high dive at Borah Pool. (The high dive at Borah Pool no longer exists, but it did when I was growing up.) The hardest part was getting off of the poofy pillow.  I found it best to roll.

We also discovered the mechanical bull, which had a very short line of children waiting for it.  I was immediately thrown, which was all kinds of fun.  Matt lasted quite a while.  I said there could be no pictures because I have seen too many 80s videos of mechanical bull riding.

Waiting for the start, I took a picture of this baby hanging out.  He was fine by himself in the shade until he wasn't, and then he cried and his mom came and got him.

Right after the horn blow.  If you know what you are looking for, you can see a tiny bit of Matt in this photo.

And here he is, coming out of the gate strong.

Then I wandered around, scoped some things out, found a place to sit, set a timer for 20 minutes, read Jan's novel.  When the timer went off, I packed up my stuff and got ready to watch for Matt.  To my surprise, he appears suddenly before me.  He is faster than I think!  I had to run to catch these next set of pictures.
Climbing over an obstacle.

And another one.

Coming down on the other side.

Going up over the top.

With an assist.

Climbing the net to the water slide.

Perfect speedy sliding form.

Out of the water and headed for the finish line. (Also one of my favorite photos this year.)

Completed!

Posing.

Close up of the ruggedness.

On our way out, there was a dance contest, which Matt entered.

This guy said I could be the judge until I said that I knew someone.  So a girl picked a winner who wasn't Matt.  Silly girl.

I had fun with the timer function on my camera and made a short movie with no sound.  At various points through the day I set the camera to take photos at regular intervals and then set the camera down next to me, or held it steady (mostly) to see what it would capture. Some fun pictures came of my experimentation.  The last set is the start of the race where you can see Matt run by.

Matt's Ride to Remember

Packing up for the ride.  I brought a blanket, knitting and a bag full of things to do and read.

Antares gives a final inspection to the bike.

Matt unloads from the car.

The ride cue sheet.

Matt gets ready to go.

Here is the start.

And he's off!

Time passes.  I go to Denny's for breakfast (because I couldn't find anything else in Canby) stop by Fred Meyer and purchase bins for storage for the back of the car. I fill up the gas tank and get the car washed and it's still only 9am.  So I hung out in a park until 10, when the Canby library opened.  I poked around there and then drove back to the race site, where I napped and read in the back of the car until I thought Matt would be done.  Then I sat by the finish line and kept an eye out for his arrival.

Sadly, I missed the big finish. He suddenly loomed before me.  So I had him pose.

After stowing his bike and changing his shirt, Matt got his food which was delicious.  Because after riding 60+ miles everything is delicious.

He was also a fan of the root beer floats and had two of those.
It was a good bike ride.  Thanks to the Ride to Remember.

Rock and Roll Half Marathon

Preparation.

More preparation.

Our theme today is stretching.

Establishing shot.

I loved how organized this race was.  All through the food-and-fun area they had these guitar pick letters of the alphabet to make it easy to meet up with people.

Pace car.

Pace bicycles?  What are these guys supposed to do?

I decided to take several pictures of the start line.  Several turned out to be 600+. (My hands went numb several times.) I've mashed them all into a 2:30 slide show for you.  It's fun to watch around the minute mark, when people start coming back the other way on the other side of the street. At that point, those people have run 3+ miles and a lot of people haven't even started yet. It pays to be an elite runner.

Nothing says "rock and roll" like portable sinks.

It's so rock and roll!
While I was taking 600+ start line photos, the band was warming up.  I wanted to get a picture of the lead singer in his red velvet suit, but the band had wandered off by the time I was done at the start line.

Rock and Roll security guards.

The best time to use the port-a-potties?  Right after the race has begun.

Amazingly, these are the police that pace the lead runners.  Which means that some people have already finished.  I've still got a bit of a wait.  Matt is fast, but not that fast.

And here is one of the reasons I don't want to be a police officer.  There's a lot of standing around.

Spotting my first finisher.

Reading a friend's novel.

This guy came and shared the bench with me. Apparently he's a fast runner.

Finish line freebies.

She had amazing hair!

Mill Ends Park.  We just visited that during the Shamrock run.

Attempt at a candid was ruined when she spotted me taking the picture.

I love the wraps.

Ambulances at the ready.

Finisher!

Nice medals.

I neglected to remember to remind Matt to bring clothes for after the race (falling down on my athletic supporter job) and so I fashioned him this outfit out of four post-race blankets. He loved it.

Check out the ice on this guy's ankle. Also: theme photo!

See!  People waiting at their alphabetical guitar pick for their families.

Matt and Burt.  Finished!

Also, Matt was on TV.  Here's the link.
